Marcus Rashford has bid farewell to his Manchester United teammates as he finalizes a loan move to Aston Villa.
The 27-year-old has been seeking an exit from Old Trafford since his bombshell interview following United’s victory over Manchester City, where he was left out of the squad due to poor training performances.
In that interview, Rashford admitted he was ready for a new challenge after two difficult years. He has not featured in any of United’s last 12 matches and has struggled to secure a transfer, with both Barcelona and AC Milan withdrawing their interest.
However, Aston Villa have now stepped in, making a late move for Rashford after selling Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.
According to the Daily Mail, Rashford said his goodbyes to United’s players and staff on Saturday at the Carrington training ground after receiving the green light for his move to Villa Park.
Personal terms have been agreed, with only minor details left to finalize. Rashford was not alone in bidding farewell, as Tyrell Malacia is also set to leave United for Benfica.
Villa officials worked tirelessly to finalize the loan deal, with Rashford’s £315,000-a-week wages proving a major hurdle.
While Villa are unlikely to break their wage structure—where Emi Martinez is currently the highest earner—an agreement has been reached, meaning United will continue covering part of Rashford’s salary while he plays for another club. Villa have reportedly included an option to buy Rashford at a later date.
Villa manager Unai Emery has been a long-time admirer of Rashford and hinted at further transfer activity before the window closes.
“Hopefully, in the next two or three days, we can bring in two or three players,” Emery said on Friday.
“It is not normal, what we are doing in this transfer window, but there are circumstances we must accept. The club is working hard, and we need to act quickly.”
Despite uncertainty over further signings, Emery remains confident in his squad’s ability to compete.
“If we don’t add new players, I am still confident we can compete in the Premier League and Champions League,” he added. “But of course, we are trying to bring in quality players who can enhance the team.”
