Ruben Amorim has told of his "anxiety" in his first few weeks as Man Utd manager while emphasising the "special" reception from fans.
The relief he showed after his team's thrilling 3-2 Europa League triumph against Bodo Glimt demonstrated these nerves over how well the players will adapt to his coaching.
The desire to succeed and the immense challenge ahead of him are evident in Amorim's words. He admits to feeling tense.
"I get anxious because I don't know what will happen. We don't control anything at the moment," he said. "I don't know the players and we have not worked a lot together."
The draw against Ipswich in his first match was inconclusive with little time to work with the players and there was little improvement in their play.
But against Bodo Glimt there were a lot more positive signs, a lot more still to do but the team seemed to have a direction to move in at least.
Amorim's new strategy
A wing-back formation is unfamiliar at United who have traditionally played with 4-4-2 for decades but it is already showing positive signs under the Portuguese.
Amorim of course used it extremely successfully at Sporting but there was a lot of debate whether he has the players to use it at Utd.
He believes the system has allowed the team to better control the tempo and helps them create chances going forward. His only lament was that "we should kill the game before the end" as he saw plenty of chances wasted.
A warm welcome
It was Amorim's first match at Old Trafford on Thursday and he got a warm welcomes from the faithful.
He got a standing ovation and he is proving his worth. And Amorim pointed out: "I have done nothing for this club yet but the way they support me from the beginning made me feel I am not alone now, that I am one of them. I hope not to disappoint them."
