Youri Tielemans is set for his debut in a crunch test for
Manchester United as they face Champions League winners Paris Saint Germain.
United travel to Gothenburg having already beaten Atletico Madrid and Rosenborg during their preparations for the new campaign.
But the meeting with PSG represents another step up in quality – and one that will provide
Michael Carrick with a much clearer indication of where his team currently stands.
And it will be a chance to see Tielemans for the first time in a Reds shirt following his £35 million move from Aston Villa.
How Tielemans fits in
United have been searching for greater control in midfield, and Tielemans brings something different to the options already available.
The 29-year-old is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, capable of switching play with his passing and has a proven ability to contribute goals from midfield.
His experience could also be particularly important with United returning to the Champions League.
Andrey Santos has impressed during pre-season and appears to have already developed an understanding with Mason Mount, while Fernandes remains the creative heartbeat of the team.
Tielemans could be an excellent link-up player but he will have to work hard with plenty of competition.
PSG provide the perfect test
PSG arrive as European champions and possess one of the most technically gifted squads.
Vitinha, João Neves and Warren Zaïre-Emery provide an outstanding test for United's midfield, while the attacking threat of Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué will test Carrick's defence.
United have already shown encouraging signs this summer, but PSG will punish any weaknesses far more severely than the previous opponents.
Could United use the game to scout PSG?
United have been linked with several PSG
players, although none are regarded as imminent targets.
Warren Zaïre-Emery, aged 20, has already established himself as a major figure in PSG's midfield and United scouts will be watching him closely.
There have been reports that United are weighing up a bid but it is unlikely that PSG will be willing to let an important player with a big future leave.
Also linked have been Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué as has Kvaratskhelia with the Georgian winger the least likely to move due to his value to Luis Enrique's project.
United team news
Youri Tielemans is in line to make his maiden outing while Bruno Fernandes is also back and ready to captain the team.
Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are available to bolster the full-back options but Senne Lammens and Matheus Cunha miss out due to unrelated minor illnesses, with both expected to link up with the squad in the Republic of Ireland afterwards.
Benjamin Sesko is also still out injured having also missed the end of last season.
Carrick has taken a 22-man group to Sweden for the fixture, which is part of Tour 2026, presented by Snapdragon.
Tom Heaton could get another run-out after playing for the full 90 minutes of the 2-1 win over Atletico de Madrid, with Altay Bayindir departing for Celta Vigo on loan.
