Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing a top-class midfielder before the transfer window closes, but securing a deal is proving to be highly complicated, according to multiple sources.
With the 11pm deadline fast approaching, United are running out of time to complete any last-minute signings.
Moves for Leon Bailey, Christopher Nkunku, and Mathys Tel now appear unlikely, further emphasizing United’s determination to keep Alejandro Garnacho if Napoli or Chelsea make a late bid.

Mathys Tel Joins Spurs Despite United Interest

One of the most dramatic transfer stories of the window has been Mathys Tel’s sudden U-turn on a move to Tottenham.
Spurs had initially agreed a €60m (£50m) deal with Bayern Munich, but the move collapsed when Tel rejected them.
However, just days later, Tottenham returned with a straight loan offer, which Bayern accepted, and Tel has now agreed to join the North London club.
This development comes as a blow to United, who also had a loan bid rejected by Bayern. Reports had suggested that Tel favored a move to Old Trafford, but circumstances did not align in their favour, allowing Spurs to swoop in and complete the deal.

United Eye Douglas Luiz, But Financial Constraints Pose a Problem

Meanwhile, United have opted against signing a centre-back to replace the injured Lisandro Martinez, despite fears his knee injury could be season-ending.
Instead, their focus has shifted to midfield, with reports that United hold an interest in Douglas Luiz.
“Douglas Luiz’s anticipated return to the Premier League is looking difficult. Manchester United have an interest, but the prospect of any agreement with Juventus is not close.”
Luiz, 26, joined Juventus from Aston Villa last summer in a €50m (£42m) move, but has struggled for game time, managing just 656 minutes across all competitions.
However, during his time at Villa Park, Luiz was regarded as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders, winning Aston Villa Players' Player of the Year in 2022/23.

United’s Financial Dilemma

United’s interest in Luiz is genuine, but sources indicate a deal is unlikely due to financial constraints.
A loan move would be United’s preferred option, as the club is reluctant to sanction a major permanent transfer so late in the window—unless it aligns with their long-term strategy.
Additionally, United lack the financial flexibility to fund Luiz’s permanent signing unless they offload a key player—with Garnacho being the most likely candidate.
Given these complications and time constraints, a move for Luiz remains highly ambitious, and unless something changes dramatically, United could be forced to wait until the summer to strengthen their midfield.
