Manchester United’s search for a new striker has intensified after ruling out a move for Newcastle’s
Alexander Isak due to his £150m price tag and they are focusing on three players.
With the Premier League season starting August 17 and United’s attack needing reinforcement after scoring just 44 league goals last season, manager
Ruben Amorim is targeting three alternative forwards.
RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, and PSG’s Randal Kolo Muani are the three players.
Each player brings unique qualities, but financial constraints and competition pose challenges for United’s transfer strategy.
Benjamin Sesko
The 22-year-old Slovenian, likened to Erling Haaland for his 6’5” frame and clinical finishing, is United’s top target.
Leipzig recently lowered Sesko’s price to £60m-£70m, a significant drop from £85m, making him a viable option.
United’s recruitment director, Christopher Vivell, who scouted Sesko at Leipzig, is leveraging his connections to push the deal.
Sesko’s 21 goals in 45 games last season and 39 in 87 for Leipzig highlight his potential.
However, Newcastle’s interest in Sesko as an Isak replacement, backed by Champions League football and potential funds from Isak’s sale, could complicate United’s pursuit.
Ollie Watkins
The 29-year-old Aston Villa star, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season, is another option.
His versatility and work rate make him a fit for Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, but Villa have issued a hands-off warning, insisting Watkins is not for sale.
United’s inquiry was rebuffed, and his high valuation, likely exceeding £70m, strains United’s budget after spending £133.5m on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Player sales, such as Alejandro Garnacho or Jadon Sancho, may be necessary to fund the transfer.
Randal Kolo Muani
The 24-year-old PSG forward, valued at around £70m, offers pace and versatility.
Despite a modest 9 goals in 40 games last season, his potential remains high. United’s interest is noted, but PSG’s reluctance to sell and United’s PSR limitations make the deal challenging.
With Marcus Rashford’s loan to Barcelona freeing up £12m in wages, United must navigate PSR and rival interest to secure one of these strikers before the season begins.
