Manchester United are ready to shake up the transfer market with a stunning move for Ipswich Town’s breakout striker Liam Delap, as Ruben Amorim looks to inject fresh blood into his misfiring attack.
The Red Devils, languishing after a limp 2024-25 Premier League campaign, have set their sights on the 21-year-old powerhouse, who’s been tearing it up for the Tractor Boys in their return to the top flight.
Delap, son of former Stoke and Southampton hardman Rory Delap, has caught United’s eye with a dazzling run of form—10 goals and 5 assists in 26 appearances this season.
His blend of pace, physicality, and clinical finishing has turned heads at Old Trafford, where Amorim is desperate to solve a goal-scoring crisis that’s seen United net just 37 times in 31 league games as of April 7, 2025.
Sources say the Portuguese gaffer sees Delap as a budget-friendly alternative to pricier targets like Victor Osimhen.
“United are sniffing around Delap big time,” a club insider told the Daily Star. “Amorim loves his work rate and versatility—perfect for that 3-4-3 system he’s obsessed with.
"They reckon he’s got the raw potential to be a top Premier League striker, and they want to nab him before the big boys come calling.”
The former Manchester City academy star, who joined Ipswich for £15m last summer, has a £40m release clause in his contract—a snip compared to the £60m-£80m fees floated for Europe’s elite forwards.
United’s scouts were reportedly in the stands for Ipswich’s 2-1 win over Wolves last month, where Delap bagged the winner, and talks with his representatives are said to be “warming up” ahead of the summer window.
Fans are split on the potential swoop. One X user gushed, “Delap’s a beast—proper old-school striker with a modern twist. United need that fire.” Another grumbled, “We’re shopping at Ipswich now? Aim higher, lads.”
But with United’s budget squeezed by Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and a need to offload flops like Joshua Zirkzee, Delap’s price tag and homegrown status make him a smart fit.
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna, a former United coach, won’t let his star man go without a fight. “Liam’s loving it here—he’s our talisman,” McKenna said recently.
But with United’s pulling power and Amorim’s vision of a youthful, hungry squad, the lure of Old Trafford could prove too strong. If the deal comes off, Delap could be the shock signing to kickstart United’s rebuild—watch this space!
