David Beckham and Sir Alex Ferguson have led the tributes to Mark Hughes in a new documentary about the legendary Manchester United striker.
Sparky is the focus of a brand-new documentary in the BBC’s Legends of Welsh Sport series.
The first episode, a half-hour feature, delves into Hughes’ illustrious club career with United and Barcelona.
It brings together some of the biggest names in British football, including Sir Alex Ferguson, David Beckham, and Gary Lineker, who offer their perspectives on Hughes’ remarkable talent and his reserved personality off the pitch.

Beckham Pays Tribute

David Beckham, reflecting on Hughes’ influence, remarked: “There are certain players that played for United over the years that set the tone of the club.
"We were able to learn from players like Mark. That is why Mark is part of Manchester United history.” He added: “Mark was a hero for me growing up as a Manchester United fan."

From Wrexham to European Stardom

Hughes’ journey began in Wrexham, where he was discovered in the amateur leagues of Ruabon.
His rise at United marked him as a major talent, leading to a high-profile move to Barcelona, where he joined fellow British star Gary Lineker.
But while Lineker thrived in Spain, Hughes faced challenges adapting to life at the Catalan club. He was given the nickname of the "bull" by locals who saw his strength and physical attributes but his style of play was never fully appreciated.
The documentary captures this tumultuous period, exploring Hughes’ struggles at Barcelona and his triumphant return to Manchester United, where he solidified his status as a club icon.

A Hero to Beckham

For Beckham, Hughes was more than a footballing great—he was a personal hero. Beckham recalls his heartbreak when Hughes left for Barcelona and his elation years later when he donned the number 10 shirt at United, following in his idol’s footsteps.
