Manchester United
crashed out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by League Two Grimsby after a 2-2 draw in 90 minutes.
The home side took the lead when Charles Vernam’s effort beat
Andre Onana at his near post, and the United goalkeeper committed another error just eight minutes later as he failed to deal with a cross before Tyrell Warren bundled the ball home.
United introduced Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo at half time and the latter handed United a lifeline with his first goal for the club. Harry Maguire headed United level in the 89th minute.
Clarke Oduor and Matheus Cunha missed in the penalty shootout to send it to sudden death. Mbeumo missed the decisive penalty as Grimsby won the shootout 12-11.
Here are how the players rated at Blundell Park
Andre Onana
Came back into the side and was culpable for both goals. Flimsy and gettable, he is playing his way out of the club. Great save in the shootout and scored. 5
Tyler Fredricson
A boy among men. Grimsby targeted him repeatedly and Fredricson was devoid of a senior teammate to help him out. Substituted at half-time. 2
Harry Maguire
Reclaimed the captain’s armband and rediscovered his old, bad form. Unsettled from the start and could not shore United up. But scored another big goal. 7
Ayden Heaven
Lacked composure and too casual amid the blood and thunder of a League Two ground. Seemed to underestimate Grimsby. 4
Diogo Dalot
Dismal at both ends. Failed to protect Fredricson and failed to provide adequate service in the final third. Scored in the shootout. 4
Manuel Ugarte
Demanded a foul in the build-up to Grimsby’s first goal. People at the club are giving up on him and you can see why. Not up to it. Hooked at the interval. 2
Kobbie Mainoo
The best of a bad bunch in the first half but prone to careless errors with the ball. Not a performance to play his way back into the side but great penalty. 6
Patrick Dorgu
Played kick-and-rush. Playing by default amid the absence of an established left winger and getting found out weekly. 2
Amad
Cowed early on and fortunate to emerge for the second half. Did not get anywhere all night. 3
Matheus Cunha
For the first time in a United shirt, failed to impose himself against the weakest opponent. Tried without succeeding. Dreadful penalty. 4
Benjamin Sesko
Out of kilter with his new teammates for most of the evening but came closest to scoring in the first half. Slotted in his penalty. 5
Subs
Bruno Fernandes
Brought some much-needed authority to United’s play. 6
Matthijs de Ligt
Actually appeared capable of defending. 6
Bryan Mbeumo
Scored his first goal for the club. Missed the decisive penalty. 6
Mason Mount
Gamely occupied the left wing. Crossed for Maguire to score. 7
Joshua Zirkzee
Imbecilic foul but scored a penalty in sudden death. 6
Manager
Amorim’s body language has never looked worse. He picked a strong enough team but United regressed egregiously. Mbeumo came on to score and fellow substitute Mount assisted Maguire. 5
