Man Utd draw with Sunderland
A new-look Manchester United with plenty of changes struggled against Sunderland's tenacity and they had Senne Lammens to thank for not losing.
United badly missed Casemiro in midfield and Benjamin Sesko in attack with fringe players unable to step up.
It was a disappointing game for United's creative players with Amad Diallo again struggling and Matheus Cunha hesitant.
Only in the final moments of the game did they put any real pressure on the Sunderland goal.

Player ratings

Senne Lammens: Started well with a smart save from Noah Sadiki and dived at Brian Brobbey's feet to avert danger. Another big save from Brobbey after the break and he did superbly well overall to prevent United conceding. 9
Noussair Mazraoui: Struggled when Chemsdine Talbi ran directly at him. Failed to lay down a challenge to Diogo Dalot in the second half of this season and this was below his best. 5
Harry Maguire: Competitive in the air in both boxes but a disappointing game in possession. Gave it away too softly at times and invited pressure. 6
Lisandro Martinez: Got his first pass wrong and seemed to dent his confidence. Found it hard against the physical Brobbey, who dominated their battles. 5
Luke Shaw: Fought pretty well at left-back and felt like he had a solid game given the pressure United were under. Safe in possession but couldn't get forward enough. 6
Kobbie Mainoo: Tried to get the game under control but only succeeded in patches. Had to get through a lot of defensive work but struggled without Casemiro to bounce off. 6
Mason Mount: First start under Carrick. Didn't get much of a chance to show what he can do on the ball, but worked hard to disrupt things defensively. Partnership with Mainoo felt a little lightweight. 6
Amad: Sent a first-half shot wide and was unable to impose himself on the game. He has been well below his best since returning from the African Cup of Nations. 5
Bruno Fernandes: Clearly frustrated by the team's performance and never looked like getting that record-equalling assist. A day to forget after a season to remember. 6
Matheus Cunha: A peripheral presence for a lot of the game. One really tame second-half shot in a game that felt like it needed his quality stamped on it. 5
Joshua Zirkzee: Continues to be an enigma at United as he has undoubted talent but doesn't fit into the style of play. His touch on the ball can be exquisite but he lacks pace and strength for the Premier League in the role he plays. 5
Substitutes
Patrick Dorgu: Didn't get a chance to make a difference. 6
Bryan Mbeumo: Little time to make an impact. 6
