Patrick Dorgu struck as
Manchester United moved up to fifth in the Premier League table with a 1-0 win against Newcastle.
United were pinned back for much of the second half and had to produce a defensive rearguard to hold on to the lead given them before the break.
That goal came from an unlikely source. A half-cleared long throw fell invitingly for
Patrick Dorgu, who hit a first-time left-foot volley into the bottom corner from 16 yards. Here's the player ratings.
Senne Lammens: Good save from Guimaraes in the first half and solid after the break as Newcastle piled on the pressure. 7
Diogo Dalot: Back in a familiar right-back position and moved into the attack in the second half. Tested by Gordon and had to run back with Hall as United sought to hold on. 6
Ayden Heaven: Starting ahead of Yoro was a show of faith from Amorim and did well against Woltemade. Confidence is returning after a spell on the sidelines. 7
Lisandro Martinez: Won a header against Woltemade in the first half and found his passing range again. Named captain on his return and defended very well. 8
Luke Shaw: A first start at left-back in 18 months. The odd shaky moment but came through it well and saw off Murphy in the second half. 6
Manuel Ugarte: His Cruyff turn in the first half summed up the confidence United were playing with. Still not great in possession but battled hard without the ball. 6
Casemiro: Surprised to see his number go up early in the second half. Missed a good early chance but couldn't control the game after the break. 6
Patrick Dorgu: Took his goal brilliantly and visibly grew in confidence after that. Diligent defensively and remained a real threat running forward. Best game for United. 8
Mason Mount: Set the tone again with some excellent pressing in the first half and some fine link-up play. Would be a big miss if he is now on the injured list. 7
Substitutes
Jack Fletcher: Surprised by the pace and physicality of the game early on but settled well. One good pass to get Dorgu in behind Miley. 6
Leny Yoro: Read the game well at right-back and contributed to a solid defensive effort. 7
Joshua Zirkzee: Barely saw the ball as United retreated. 6
Tyrell Malacia: No time to make an impact.
Tyler Fredricson: No time to make an impact.
