Manchester United are already mapping out their January transfer strategy, with Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson emerging as a key target.
Manager Rúben Amorim is keen to add energy and depth in the middle of the park, an area United have struggled to control so far this season.
Anderson, 21, has been one of Forest’s standout young performers, catching the eye with his composure on the ball and ability to link play between midfield and attack.
United scouts have been monitoring his progress closely, and his age profile fits with the club’s push to sign players who can grow into long-term solutions.
Amorim’s current midfield options have been inconsistent. Casemiro remains a leader but has battled injuries and suspensions, while Mason Mount has yet to establish himself since arriving last summer.
Christian Eriksen was trusted for his creativity and there has not been a replacement for him this summer.
There is a lack of a dynamic, box-to-box midfielders which has left United exposed in transition although there is still hope that Kobbie Mainoo can grow into this role.
Anderson is not the only name under consideration. Sources suggest United are also weighing moves for more established Premier League midfielders if the right deal opens up.
Players like João Gomes (Wolves) and Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa) have been admired for their energy and ability to cover ground — attributes Amorim values highly, reported ESPN.
The move for Anderson signals that United may prioritise players already adapted to English football, rather than overseas projects. With the squad still being reshaped under Amorim, targeting midfielders who can contribute immediately is becoming a priority.
Whether Anderson becomes the club’s main January push remains to be seen, but the message is clear: United want reinforcements in the centre of the pitch to avoid another campaign where the midfield looks lightweight against the league’s top sides.
