Chelsea could secure a permanent deal for Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho at the end of the season, following his current loan spell at Stamford Bridge.
The 24-year-old, who joined the Blues on a season-long loan in the summer, has reportedly caught the attention of Chelsea’s hierarchy, with discussions of a long-term transfer already on the horizon.
Sancho, who struggled to find his best form during his time at Old Trafford, has been given a fresh lease of life under Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. His loan move to west London came after a turbulent period at United, where he fell out of favour under former manager Erik ten Hag.
The winger’s temporary switch to Chelsea has allowed him to rediscover the flair and confidence that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after talents during his earlier spell at Borussia Dortmund.
Chelsea are said to be considering a permanent move for Sancho as part of their ongoing squad rebuild, with the club potentially looking to negotiate a deal that could involve one of their own fringe players heading to Manchester United in exchange.
Left-back Ben Chilwell, who has been sidelined under Maresca and is no longer a regular starter, has been mooted as a possible makeweight in a swap arrangement. United’s ongoing injury issues at left-back, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia often unavailable, could make Chilwell an attractive option for the Red Devils.
Sancho’s permanent departure from Manchester United would mark the end of a challenging chapter for the England international, who joined the club in a £73million deal from Dortmund in 2021.
Despite high expectations, his time at Old Trafford was marred by inconsistency, a public fallout with Ten Hag, and a loan return to Dortmund last season, where he helped the German side reach the Champions League final. United are happy for a permanent exit for Sancho at the end of the season, as they look to recover a portion of their initial investment and reshape their squad under Amorim’s leadership.
For Chelsea, securing Sancho on a permanent basis would add further depth and quality to their attacking options, complementing recent signings such as Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, and Mykhailo Mudryk.
And if Sancho doesn't join Chelsea at the end of the season, then they faces a financial penalty, and so United win either way.
The former Manchester City academy star’s Premier League experience, combined with his potential for growth, makes him an appealing long-term target for Maresca’s project at Stamford Bridge.
As the season progresses, Chelsea will continue to monitor Sancho’s performances during his loan spell, with a view to making a decision on a permanent transfer in the summer. For United, offloading Sancho would align with their strategy of moving on players who do not fit into Amorim’s plans, while a potential swap deal involving Chilwell could address their defensive concerns.
For now, Sancho’s focus remains on making an impact at Chelsea, but a permanent move to the Blues at the end of the season could provide the fresh start he needs to reignite his career at the highest level.
