Manchester United supporters are rallying for a major protest targeting the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe ahead of the derby against Manchester City, set for April 6, 2025, at the Etihad Stadium.
The demonstration stems from growing discontent over ticket price hikes at Old Trafford, a sore point since Ratcliffe’s INEOS group acquired a 25% stake in the club from the Glazers 14 months ago.
Fans are furious at the British billionaire’s cost-cutting initiatives, which have included slashing jobs across the club and jacking up matchday costs, placing additional financial strain on loyal supporters.
The Glazers, long criticized for saddling United with debt since their 2005 takeover, remain the majority owners, but Ratcliffe’s involvement has only deepened the sense of betrayal among the fanbase.
The protest’s groundwork was laid on March 29, 2025, during “United United Day” at Broadhurst Park, home of FC United of Manchester, a breakaway club formed in opposition to the Glazers.
Here, Manchester United fans united with FC United supporters and The 1958, a prominent fan group, to voice their anger. The primary grievance is the escalating cost of attending matches, with season ticket prices soaring and fears that traditional supporters might be edged out for pricier hospitality packages.
A spokesperson for The 1958 highlighted the intensity of their efforts, stating, “I don’t think we have done as many protests over a short amount of time previously, and it does take some organizing.” The group plans to leverage the derby’s spotlight to make their message unavoidable.
With United languishing in 13th in the Premier League, the timing is poignant. The club faces Nottingham Forest on Tuesday before the City clash, but off-field unrest overshadows on-pitch struggles under head coach Ruben Amorim.
This is a tipping point—fans fed up with the Glazers’ profit-driven ownership and Ratcliffe’s perceived hypocrisy, having promised investment but delivering austerity. This protest could mark a defining moment in the ongoing battle for the soul of Manchester United.
