Lisandro Martinez has hit back at Paul Scholes after the
Manchester United legend criticized him, questioning his ability to help the club win the Premier League.
Martinez, who joined United from Ajax for £55m in 2022, has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in the 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace earlier this month.
Despite his absence,
Scholes took aim at the Argentine defender during the latest episode of The Overlap Fan Debate, by Sky Bet.
"Even when he's fit, he's not good enough to win the Premier League with," Scholes remarked.
Martinez Hits Back on Instagram
Martinez wasted no time in responding, taking to Instagram on Tuesday evening with a fiery reply.
"This miserable guy is hurting... You put him in Argentina, and he wouldn’t survive," the defender wrote.
This isn't the first time Scholes has questioned Martinez. Last month, the former midfielder suggested he would be willing to sell the centre-back as part of a major squad overhaul at Old Trafford.
Martinez was one of eight first-team stars Scholes was ready to offload, alongside Luke Shaw and Mason Mount.
Scholes Doubles Down, Criticizes De Ligt and Yoro
Martinez wasn’t the only United defender in Scholes’ firing line. The United great also expressed concerns over fellow centre-backs Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, questioning their ability to form a title-winning defense.
"His (De Ligt's) age (25) and his amount of clubs already concern me. He was brilliant at Ajax, but he seems to be getting worse as he gets older," Scholes said."Bayern Munich, Juventus, they've let him go for some reason."
Scholes continued his critique by addressing United’s defensive ambitions:"Where are your ambitions? I'm talking about getting a team to win the Premier League. Are you going to win the Premier League with De Ligt and Yoro as your centre-halves?"
On Yoro, Scholes added:"Look, he's a young player, but I haven't liked what I've seen so far. Did you see the Southampton game? He's one centre-half I would keep, when I talk about that spine and two centre-halves."
Martinez’s Determination to Prove Scholes Wrong
Martinez has already enjoyed success at United, winning the Carabao Cup in his debut season and lifting the FA Cup last term despite injury struggles. However, his fitness issues have persisted, and he is not expected to return until late 2025.
Despite the setback, Martinez remains determined to silence his critics—and it’s clear he has Scholes at the top of his list.
