Gary Neville has called on Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim to consider bringing Danny Welbeck back to Old Trafford.
Welbeck, a product of United’s academy, spent six seasons with the first team before leaving in 2014 after scoring 29 goals in 142 appearances.
He later moved to Arsenal, where he netted 32 times in 126 matches, followed by spells at Watford and Brighton.
Now at 34 years old, Welbeck has experienced a career resurgence, impressing in Brighton’s recent 3-0 win over Chelsea—a performance that caught Neville’s attention.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: “He was let go too quickly at United. Louis van Gaal had a very precise style of play, and back then, Danny wasn’t as refined in his game. Van Gaal just didn’t fancy him at all.
"But he’s actually perfect for how Manchester United should play—threatening space in behind, linking up with forwards. The idea that he’s not good enough for United is absolute rubbish.”
Reports previously suggested that former United manager Erik ten Hag had considered re-signing Welbeck.
Instead, Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee were brought in, but Neville now believes Welbeck could be the ideal squad player—similar to how Divock Origi was used at Liverpool.
He explained: “He’s good enough to be part of a pool of three or four strikers at United.
"Look at Liverpool—they’ve always had a mix of forward players with different abilities. Salah is the standout, but they’ve had players like Gakpo and, before that, Origi—who played a crucial role at times.
"People quickly label players as ‘not good enough’—but he is. He should be in a 20-man squad at a top club. He’s still performing at a high level and tearing apart defenses.
“Tonight, he absolutely dominated Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah. That Brighton front four was excellent, and he was a massive part of it.”
With United struggling for attacking options, Neville sees Welbeck as an experienced, versatile forward who could add depth to Amorim’s squad.
