Manchester United’s
Matthijs de Ligt attributes his fine form this season to a fresh mindset and freedom from injuries.
The Dutch defender played a pivotal role last weekend, rescuing a point at Tottenham with a late goal in the Premier League.
Remarkably, De Ligt is the only
United player to have been on the pitch for every minute of league action so far—a run that’s seen him earn a recall to the Netherlands squad for November's internationals.
Reflecting on his consistency, De Ligt pointed to the importance of a trouble-free pre-season this summer, suggesting it was a major factor behind his confidence and performances.
The centre-back explained: “I’m 26 now and, in my view, I’m entering the best phase of my career physically and mentally. Before, I was mainly focused on avoiding mistakes—now, I want to focus on doing as many things right as possible.”
He acknowledged that injuries in previous campaigns had undermined his trust in his body. “There are a few reasons for my progress. I’ve dealt with injuries in the past that hurt my confidence," he said.
"This year, having a full pre-season really helped. Now I know the club, I know the league, and I feel more secure and assertive on the pitch.
"I’m doing more strength work again, like I did before, and criticism over my fitness doesn’t bother me anymore. That used to get to me, but experience has taught me what works best for me, and I’m not changing course now.”
Asked about returning to the Netherlands squad, De Ligt said: “Missing out on selection was tough, but ultimately the manager makes that decision. Staying focused and believing in myself was key—I see this call-up as a personal victory.”
Ronald Koeman, his national team coach, noted that De Ligt is notably calmer and more assured now, making him a clear choice for the squad once again.
Though De Ligt was not included in United’s official leadership group at the start of the season, manager Ruben Amorim stressed after the Spurs draw that the defender leads by example.
Amorim explained, “Some players lead by the way they play, others through involvement off the pitch.
"It’s about integrating different types of leadership, but ultimately everyone needs to show leadership and support each other. De Ligt is aggressive and solid in defense, and there’s even greater ability with the ball than he’s shown so far.
"Right now, he’s rightly focused on avoiding mistakes, but as he develops, our centre-back trio will set the tempo and quality for our game.”
