Bruno Fernandes says that players need to "prove their value" at the club after harsh criticism from Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Despite a challenging season, Manchester United still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League. They produced one of their best performances of the season to beat Real Sociedad at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
And once again Fernandes proved his value to the team with important goals. The Portuguese, whose contract with the club runs until 2027, has expressed his desire to remain at Old Trafford as long as the team is in contention for silverware.
He stated, “At this club, there’s no room for complacency. We have to demonstrate our worth every day, whether it’s in training or during matches.”
“I’m in the same position as my teammates. It’s not about individual achievements, goals, or assists—it’s about the collective effort of the team.”
“I’m delighted to be part of this club. My ambition is to win titles, compete in the most prestigious tournaments, and challenge for the biggest prizes. That’s what I told the club, and they’ve assured me it’s their goal too.”
Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently commented that some of the players he inherited are not up to the required standard and are earning excessive wages as he bids to cut back on spending.
In an interview with BBC Sport, the billionaire specifically mentioned midfielder Casemiro, forward Rasmus Hojlund, goalkeeper Andre Onana, and wingers Antony and Jadon Sancho—the latter two currently on loan at other clubs.
Fernandes responded, “No player enjoys hearing criticism or being told they’re not good enough, overpaid, or anything of that nature.”
“But every player’s contract is an agreement made with the club. What matters is proving your value and making a positive impact on the team.”
