Carlos Baleba has held talks with manager Fabian Hurzeler about his future amid renewed interest from
Manchester United.
The 21-year-old Cameroonian was one of the stand-out performers in the league last season, but this campaign has been overshadowed by persistent speculation and a dip in form.
United made a serious attempt to sign Baleba during the summer transfer window as manager
Ruben Amorim hunted for a long-term replacement in midfield.
However, Brighton refused to negotiate, maintaining a firm £100 million valuation that instantly ended talks. Despite that, United remain admirers of Baleba’s blend of strength, drive, and composure, and are expected to revisit their interest in 2026.
Baleba’s form has been inconsistent in the early stages of the season, with reports of frustration after being substituted at half-time in multiple games.
Those close to the player say a lingering knee problem from pre-season affected both his fitness and confidence.
Hurzeler, however, has moved quickly to support his midfielder, meeting with Baleba privately to discuss his mindset and focus for the season. The Brighton boss reportedly urged him to “stay humble and trust the process,” insisting he remains a crucial part of the squad.
Club sources suggest Baleba reassured Hurzeler of his loyalty and commitment despite speculation linking him to Old Trafford.
The midfielder’s renewed focus has been visible in recent performances, as he impressed during Brighton’s victories over Wolves and Newcastle, regaining some of the sharpness that first attracted United’s attention.
While Manchester United monitor his situation closely, Brighton’s hierarchy remain confident the player will stay put this season.
Chairman Tony Bloom has publicly dismissed suggestions of an imminent sale and praised Baleba’s “immense progress” since joining from Lille.
Still, should the midfielder rediscover his top form and United make the necessary player sales, talks could reopen in 2026. For now, Baleba’s focus remains on rediscovering consistency under Hurzeler and steering Brighton towards another strong Premier League campaign.
