Manchester United co-owner Avram Glazer has made it clear he has no plans to sell the club, despite their ongoing struggles this season.
The 60-year-old American businessman and his family still retain a controlling stake in United, even after selling a minority share to INEOS chief
Sir Jim Ratcliffe last year.
The Glazers’ ownership has been a long-standing source of frustration for United fans, many of whom have protested against their reign since the controversial 2005 takeover led by Avram and his late father, Malcolm Glazer.
Many supporters had hoped the
Glazers would finally walk away after announcing plans for new investors in November 2022, when they revealed they were “exploring strategic alternatives.”
However, more than two years later, they remain in charge, with no intention of stepping aside.
Avram Glazer’s Defiant Response
While visiting former U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, Avram was confronted by a Sky Sports reporter and asked whether he was considering selling United. His response was short but emphatic:
"No."
United’s Debt Surpasses £1 Billion
Glazer’s statement comes just hours after United’s latest financial report revealed that the club’s net debt has exceeded £1 billion—a direct consequence of the leveraged buyout in 2005.
The club’s Q2 financial results, released on Wednesday, show:
- A £27.7 million loss for the three months ending December 2024
- Total revenue drop from £225.8m (December 2023) to £198.7m
- A £37.6m finance cost, primarily due to interest on club borrowing
- £10.4m in severance payments for Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff
- £4m paid to Dan Ashworth after his dismissal
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire confirmed that United’s total interest payments under the Glazers now exceed £1 billion, adding to fan frustration.
Financial Struggles and Ownership Uncertainty
United attributed the heavy finance costs to an “unfavourable swing in exchange rates”, resulting in unrealised losses on unhedged USD borrowings.
Despite growing financial concerns and continued fan unrest, the Glazers remain firmly in control, showing no signs of relinquishing their grip on the club.
