Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly "devastated" after Ruben Amorim declared that the current team may be the worst in the club’s storied history.
The bold statement came in the aftermath of Manchester United's disheartening 3-1 home loss to Brighton, their sixth defeat at Old Trafford this season.
It’s a statistic not seen since the 1893-94 campaign, back when the club was known as Newton Heath and nearly two decades before moving to their iconic stadium.
Amorim didn’t mince words, stating, “We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United.”
Aware of the stir his comment would cause, he added, “I know you want headlines.
"But I’m saying that because we have to acknowledge it to change it. Everybody here is underperforming, no matter the circumstances. We are underperforming and have to accept that.”

Neville Reacts to Amorim’s Remark

Former Manchester United defender and current Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville was stunned by the head coach’s brutal assessment.
On The Overlap US, Neville said, “If you take it out of football, this statement is incredible.
"If a manager at Tesco, NBC, or Sky came out and said, ‘I think we’re the worst team or employees we’ve ever had,’ they’d be sacked immediately in any other industry. But in football...”
Neville suggested that Amorim’s remarks would be deeply unsettling for United’s part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, along with the club’s leadership.
“For the owners, the communications department, it will be devastating to hear that from a manager they’ve just hired," he said.
"It’s a really difficult predicament for the sporting director, owners, and CEO. You never usually hear this kind of thing from a football manager while they’re in the job. Imagine being a player and listening to that.”

Amorim Admits Regret

Amorim, who reportedly damaged a television in the dressing room after the Brighton defeat, later acknowledged that his comments were too strong.
Speaking before United’s Europa League clash with Rangers, the Portuguese coach sought to clarify his remarks.
“I was talking more for myself than for my players,” Amorim said. “I understand I gave you that headline.
"I get frustrated sometimes, and I shouldn’t say things in those terms. But it is what it is. Sometimes it’s really hard to hide the frustration in certain moments.”
He revealed that he delivered a similar message to his squad before addressing the media.
“The good thing is that I said the same thing, in a different way, in the dressing room five minutes before. The response from the players was quite normal because I’m very blunt with them.”

A Team in Turmoil

Amorim’s comments have added to the pressure at Manchester United, a club struggling to find its footing under his leadership.
While his frustration reflects the gravity of the situation, his admission has raised questions about the impact on player morale and the broader perception of the club.
As United prepare to face Rangers in the Europa League, the fallout from Amorim’s remarks continues to loom large over Old Trafford.
