Alejandro Garnacho was among the
Manchester United players to apologise following their painful FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham.
The Red Devils were eliminated in the fifth round after a dramatic penalty shootout, leaving
Ruben Amorim and his squad to face yet another setback in a turbulent season. With their FA Cup campaign over, the Europa League now stands as their only chance of silverware.
Garnacho, who came off the bench, did not take a penalty, a decision that raised eyebrows among fans.
After the game he posted a picture of himself sitting on the Old Trafford pitch and simply said: "Sorry United fans".
Amorim later clarified that the omission was due to an injury concern, not a disciplinary issue following the Argentine's recent frustration at being substituted.
“Garnacho had an issue last game, so we used Eriksen because he was fully fit,” Amorim explained. “We had Garnacho on the bench in case we needed him because it was a decisive match. We tried to use Chris’ [Eriksen’s] characteristics, which are different from Garnacho’s.”
Amorim also addressed Garnacho’s previous frustration, insisting that there were no lingering issues: “The substitution last game was clear, he paid for the dinner, and he's ready to go. He's working really well, and I hope he continues to have an impact when needed.”
While Garnacho has often provided a much-needed attacking spark, United’s struggles in front of goal remain a major concern. Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee—who missed a penalty in the shootout—continue to struggle for consistency. Amorim admitted that the team as a whole must improve in attack.
“We have a problem with goals,” he said. “Today, we created chances, but even in the last game, it often felt like set-pieces were our only real threat. The first step is to create opportunities, and we did that today, but we need to improve so our forwards can be more effective in front of goal.”
