Manchester United head coach
Ruben Amorim believes
Kobbie Mainoo is best suited to an attacking midfield role, after admitting the youngster has struggled with the defensive demands.
Mainoo delivered his best performance under Amorim in
United’s 2-0 win over FCSB in the Europa League, scoring once and assisting another as United secured direct qualification to the last 16.
Playing as a No.10, with Bruno Fernandes operating deeper, Mainoo thrived with the freedom the role provided, linking up impressively with Fernandes and later Alejandro Garnacho, who was introduced at half-time.
Previously deployed as a holding midfielder, Mainoo had been described as a "complete midfielder" by former boss Erik ten Hag, but he has found game time harder to come by in recent weeks.
Amorim has now openly admitted that the 19-year-old’s defensive attributes are not yet strong enough for a deeper midfield role, and his long-term future is likely higher up the pitch.
Amorim: "He Was So Free in the No.10 Role"
Speaking after the win, Amorim explained his tactical shift for Mainoo: "We need time to understand the players, and Kobbie was struggling a lot defensively as a midfielder.
"Now, playing more as a No.10, you could see he was so free. He was comfortable near the box, linking play well. We need time to work with the players and identify the best positions for them."
United’s Second-Half Surge Secures Victory
United controlled the game throughout but stepped up the tempo in the second half, scoring twice while missing several chances to extend their lead.
"We controlled the game well. Early on, it was slower because the opponent was compact, covering space and pressing our three defenders with just one player," Amorim noted.
"In the second half, you could see them getting tired, leaving more space between the lines. Kobbie found openings, Amad had one-on-one situations, and Garna’s pace helped a lot.
"We scored two but should have scored more—at times, we had four-against-two in transitions. Overall, it was a good game. We needed to rotate the squad, and now the focus is on the next match."
With Mainoo impressing in an advanced role, Amorim may now look to further integrate him into the side as an attacking midfield option for the remainder of the season.
