Manchester United star
Alejandro Garnacho has deactivated his X (formerly Twitter) account just hours before his team’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.
The Argentine winger, previously active under the handle @agarnacho7, took down his profile, leaving fans greeted with an error message when attempting to find the page.
Garnacho’s decision to step away from the platform has sparked speculation about his focus and mindset as United prepare for one of their biggest fixtures of the season.
It remains unclear whether he will start against Liverpool, a match proceeding despite concerns over heavy snowfall potentially delaying the derby.
Garnacho has faced recent scrutiny regarding his role in the squad. Reports suggest he, alongside Marcus Rashford, was dropped by manager
Ruben Amorim for an alleged act of disrespect during a Europa League match against Viktoria Plzen.
The incident reportedly involved Garnacho turning his back on Amorim while receiving tactical instructions. While Garnacho’s representatives insist it was a misunderstanding with no lasting rift, the situation has added to the player’s turbulent season.
The 20-year-old has made substitute appearances in United’s last four games—all losses to Newcastle, Wolves, Bournemouth, and Tottenham.
His limited game time and the team’s poor form have fueled criticism, most notably from Liverpool legend Graeme Souness, who questioned Garnacho’s attitude and potential.
Writing for the Daily Mail, Souness said: “I hear about
Alejandro Garnacho being unhappy with the manager. Can someone remind me who he is?
"The last time I checked, he’s a 20-year-old boy, one step up on a ten-rung ladder. Who are you? He acts like a ‘wrong ’un’ on the pitch, and unless he changes, he has no chance of fulfilling the potential he obviously has.”
Souness continued, “Manchester United have always struggled to keep players grounded, going back to my generation and before. There’s been a drought of real leaders in that dressing room for over a decade now, and that’s part of the problem.”
For Garnacho, deactivating his social media could signal a desire to block out distractions and focus solely on helping United turn their season around. Whether that intent translates to an improved role on the pitch remains to be seen.
