Marcus Rashford has a "secret" clause in his Manchester United contract that is putting off rivals.
Barcelona have chosen against activating an option to buy while Bayern Munich are also looking elsewhere for a striker, which means Rashford's future is far from clear.
The situation is made even more difficult by the forward's contract, which significantly complicates any move, particularly within the Premier League.
Liverpool explored the possibility of signing Rashford but have ruled out a move because Manchester United included a penalty clause in his contract specifically targeting two clubs: Liverpool and Manchester City.
For those two clubs, Rashford's asking price rises to €70 million, making any deal considerably more expensive when combined with his substantial wages.
It is a complicated situation that could take until the closing stages of the transfer window to resolve.
During Rashford's most recent contract renewal, United included a €40 million release clause for any club in the world, except their two biggest Premier League rivals.
The intention was clearly to prevent an unwanted transfer to either Liverpool or Manchester City.
That clause has now reportedly discouraged one of Rashford's most realistic options for finding a new club this summer.
Liverpool are looking to strengthen on the wing and considered Rashford following his strong campaign at Barcelona, but the financial figures do not add up. Bayern Munich have also reportedly rejected the chance to sign him.
United have already informed Rashford's representatives that he is not part of their plans and should find a new club. While he will not be excluded from pre-season training, the club are encouraging him to secure a move.
United's priority is a permanent transfer, as they are not interested in sending him out on another loan.
The problem is that a move within the Premier League appears unrealistic, while only clubs in Saudi Arabia are likely to meet the financial demands involved. Rashford, however, has no desire to play in Saudi Arabia.
Following Barcelona's decision not to activate their purchase option, the situation has effectively reached a stalemate. It could remain that way for several weeks.
Rashford is not in a rush, as he is currently involved in the World Cup and is understood to believe United may eventually reopen the door to another loan move.
While alternatively, Spanish sources say Barcelona coach Hansi Flick would like Rashford to stay and promised to do everything possible to keep him on another loan deal.
