Bryan Mbeumo is reportedly frustrated as Manchester United are struggling to seal a deal with Brentford for his move.
In scenes only too familiar for United fans, while other clubs make quick and definitive moves in the transfer market, the Reds regularly appear to labour over moves which drag on.
United's latest bid of £62.5 million was rejected and negotiations continue for one of the Premier League’s most in-demand attackers.
Brentford are well aware that United are desperate to add more goals and creativity to their squad after a dismal 15th-place finish last season and they have made Mbeumo a top priority for manager Ruben Amorim’s summer rebuild.
United initially saw a £55 million offer turned down before returning with an improved bid matching the fee paid for Matheus Cunha, but Brentford remain firm, valuing the Cameroon international at over £60 million and pointing to recent high-profile transfers as benchmarks.
Notably Anthony Elanga moved for £55 million from Nottingham Forest to Newcastle and Noni Madueke could go to Arsenal from Chelsea with a fee expected to be over £50 million.
Brentford director of football Phil Giles recently spoke out about Mbeumo's future and suggested he could end up staying at Brentford. "He had a fantastic season," Giles told BBC Sport said last month.
"We expected big interest in him, we have had big interest in him. He has his ideas about where he wants to take his career, of course he does – he is well within his rights to do that. We are in constant dialogue with him and representatives about that.
"As it stands at the minute we don't have an agreement in place for him to leave. It is not impossible he is still a Brentford player next season if we agree he is going to stay. It has to be the right deal for Brentford, any club will tell you that.
"If it's not right deal why would we do it? He is certainly one of our best players, if not our best player, and we need our best players. There's no harm in keeping your best players."
Brentford’s position is strengthened by an option to extend Mbeumo’s contract by a further 12 months, despite his deal currently running until 2026.
Mbeumo, who scored 20 Premier League goals last season—trailing only three players in the division—and provided seven assists, is understood to be keen on a move to Old Trafford, even as Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle also express interest.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has acknowledged the club’s willingness to sell if their valuation is met, but warned any deal “is going to be expensive”.
United’s need for attacking reinforcements is pressing, with last season’s tally of just 44 league goals among the lowest in the league.
Amorim sees Mbeumo’s versatility and direct style as a perfect fit for his 3-4-3 system, and the player is reportedly eager to work under the Portuguese coach.
However, United are now weighing whether to submit a third bid or walk away from the deal, as Brentford’s resolve shows no sign of softening.
Mbeumo has not returned to Brentford for pre-season training, further fueling speculation about an imminent transfer.
As talks continue, United remain hopeful that a compromise can be reached, but face the prospect of missing out if they fail to meet Brentford’s demands in the coming days.
