Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has been in prolific form this season and firmly on the Man Utd radar.
New Utd boss Ruben Amorim knows him better than anyone after coaching him in Portugal until this month but the Reds will not be making a move for him next month.
With minimal goals this season and an under-performing team, the club's hierarchy believes it’s time to bring in additional firepower but Gyokeres is considered too expensive.
Striker shortage
United, who have only scored 13 goals in 12 Premier League matches to date, understand the need for a more consistent scoring ability. This scoring shortage has prompted the club to consider striker options for the January transfer window.
Gyokeres out of reach
United had their sights set on Gyokeres after they hired Amorim but he has a high price tag with half of Europe looking at him which has made a mid-season transfer more than difficult.
Alternative hitmen
With Gyokeres off the list, United are considering alternatives including Victor Osimhen, Omar Marmoush, Randal Kolo Muani, and Victor Boniface.
While Osimhen is on loan at Galatasaray and has a big release clause, Marmoush's stellar performance at Eintracht Frankfurt has caught United’s attention.
Kolo Muani, who has had limited playtime at Paris Saint-Germain, could also potentially be available for loan. Boniface is another option but comes with a hefty price tag due to his consistent performances at Bayer Leverkusen.
Financial restrictions
Financial compliance with PSR rules may limit United's choices as the club has reported substantial losses over the past three seasons.
Amorim has already dismissed the idea of a mid-season transfer of Gyokeres, stating that the price is simply too high for the club at the moment.
Gyokeres, who appears happy at Sporting, has also dismissed rumors of following Amorim to Manchester United.
