Mikael Silvestre has thrown his weight behind an unexpected idea: bringing Roy Keane back to the club to support current manager Ruben Amorim.
The suggestion comes as United struggle under Amorim’s leadership, with the team languishing in 15th place in the Premier League after a torrid run of nine losses in his first 21 games since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024.
Keane, a legendary figure at Old Trafford, has been vocal about the club’s current state, recently clashing with Amorim over captain Bruno Fernandes.
On the Stick to Football podcast, Keane praised Fernandes’ skill but slammed his leadership, arguing he lacks the fight needed to wear the armband—a stark contrast to Keane’s own tenacious captaincy from 1997 to 2005.
Amorim hit back, defending Fernandes as vital to the squad and dismissing Keane’s critique with a pointed, “My opinion is more important because I’m the coach.”
Former defender Silvestre, who played alongside Keane during United’s glory days, believes the Irishman’s return could bridge the gap between past greatness and present struggles. “Roy Keane at Manchester United would be brilliant,” Silvestre told Yaysweepstakes.com.
He argued that Keane’s fierce persona shifts when he’s part of a team—rather than criticizing from the pundit’s chair, he’d rally the players and shield them from public flak. “Inside the group, he’d work for them, not against them,” Silvestre added.
Amorim’s rocky start has drawn scrutiny, with a recent 1-0 loss to Tottenham amplifying calls for change. Silvestre sees Keane as a potential ally, offering the grit and mentality Amorim’s squad lacks. This week, Amorim also faced Wayne Rooney’s jab at his “naive” title ambitions, further highlighting the pressure he’s under.
Could Keane’s no-nonsense approach steady the ship? Silvestre thinks so, envisioning a role where Keane inspires a dressing room desperate for direction. For United fans dreaming of a revival, the idea of their former captain returning might just spark hope amid the gloom.
