Marcus Rashford is to become Barcelona player this summer after the club has now decided to activate the £28 million purchase option in his loan deal from
Manchester United.
It is the end of the saga for United but the club will be disappointed to see a talented player leaving so cheaply.
The
United youth product was one of Barcelona’s headline signings of last summer, even though he was not the club’s first choice.
Financial difficulties ruled out moves for Nico Williams and Luis Díaz, prompting the Catalan giants to take a calculated gamble on Rashford instead.
Months later, both the sporting department and coaching staff are fully satisfied with the winger’s performances and adaptation, and the decision to sign him outright is now unanimous.
Barcelona will not attempt to renegotiate the fee, as Manchester United have made it clear they will not accept a reduced price.
However, the Catalan club believe the figure is reasonable given Rashford’s quality and the inflated market values of similar players in his position, reports
Sport.
Rashford played a major role in making the move possible and is also prepared to help ensure the permanent transfer goes through.
From the beginning, the idea was always to extend his stay in Barcelona, although the club asked for time before making a final decision. That decision has now been taken.
Provided there are no major physical setbacks, the transfer will be completed in June, with Rashford expected to sign a three-year contract.
Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco both believe it would be almost impossible to find a player of Rashford’s level for the same price who could deliver such a high level of performance. He has featured in 33 matches this season, scoring 10 goals and providing 13 assists.
Rashford has become one of Barcelona’s most decisive players, showing great versatility and fully accepting his role, whether starting or coming off the bench.
Financially, the deal is considered manageable. The transfer fee is not excessive and Rashford has agreed to adjust his salary, reducing what he would have earned at Manchester United until 2028. In return, he will receive an extra year on his new contract.
