Andre Onana has been spotted driving into Manchester United’s Carrington training ground alongside his agent—just hours after Ruben Amorim axed him from the squad for Sunday’s 4-1 Premier League thrashing at Newcastle.
The Cameroon goalkeeper, still reeling from his Lyon horror show, arrived with a representative from Fali Ramadani’s Lian Sports agency, fueling speculation about his Old Trafford future.
Onana’s nightmare in Thursday’s 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon saw him gift goals to Thiago Almada and Rayan Cherki, prompting boos from fans and a savage jab from ex-United star Nemanja Matic, who branded him “one of the worst keepers in United’s history.”
Amorim’s response was ruthless—the 29-year-old was left in Cheshire as United traveled to Tyneside, with Altay Bayindir handed a Premier League debut. But Bayindir flopped too, misjudging a corner for Newcastle’s third in a 4-1 rout, leaving United 14th.
Sources say Amorim’s call was to let Onana “rest and disconnect” after a tough week, including his wife Melanie’s violent Rolex robbery in Alderley Edge last month, which left the family under 24-hour protection (Telegraph).
“It’s a mental thing,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “Sometimes you push a player, sometimes they need a break. Andre’s back training tomorrow for Lyon.” Onana reportedly accepted the decision, but his arrival with his agent—snapped by Zenpix—has set tongues wagging.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported Onana’s recent switch to Lian Sports was to chase a bumper new contract, but United’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) woes mean a transfer could now be on the cards (Sun).
Without a big-money offer, United risk a loss on the £47.2m they paid Inter Milan in 2023, with only £26.2m needed this summer to avoid a Financial Fair Play hit (MEN). Saudi clubs have shown interest, per X posts, but Onana’s camp insists he’s fighting to stay United’s No. 1.
Fans are divided. @UtdXclusive tweeted: “Onana with his agent—new deal or new club?” while @RedDevilRant fumed, “Bayindir’s no better—both cost us at Newcastle!”
Onana’s stats don’t help: 10 clean sheets in 43 games this season, but eight errors leading to goals since last term, per Opta (BBC).
United’s summer plans include eyeing Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen or Porto’s Diogo Costa (Sun), with Bayindir possibly sold.
Onana’s set to return for Thursday’s Europa League second leg against Lyon—a must-win for Champions League hopes.
After Bayindir’s gaffe, Amorim faces a dilemma. “Andre’s got my backing,” he said post-Newcastle, but with Edwin van der Sar defending Onana and Peter Schmeichel slamming him (MEN), the keeper’s on a tightrope. Can he silence the doubters, or is his United chapter closing?
