Ruben Amorim has issued a rallying cry to
Manchester United’s players and fans, demanding they “give everything” in tonight’s make-or-break Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford.
With United’s season teetering after a 4-1 Premier League thrashing at Newcastle and a 2-2 draw in Lyon’s first leg, the Portuguese boss insists victory is non-negotiable to keep Champions League hopes alive.
“This competition is our lifeline,”
Amorim told reporters yesterday, per ManUtd.com. “The Europa League trophy and a Champions League spot are massive prizes—we’re fighting for both.
"But tonight, it’s Lyon or nothing. Players, fans, everyone—get ready to give everything.”
United, languishing in 14th with just 23 points from 63 under Amorim, face a do-or-die clash, with progression hinging on cutting out errors like those that gifted Lyon’s goals last week.
The biggest talking point is Andre Onana’s return in goal after his Lyon blunders—fumbling Thiago Almada’s free-kick and Corentin Tolisso’s shot—led to his shock benching for Newcastle, where Altay Bayindir flopped in a 4-1 rout.
Amorim confirmed Onana’s recall, saying, “Andre deserves to start—he’s got the dressing room’s backing.”
Despite Nemanja Matic’s brutal “worst-ever” jab and 10 errors leading to goals since last season, the £44m keeper is trusted to deliver, though Amorim hinted at a summer goalkeeper hunt, eyeing Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen.
United’s injury crisis adds pressure. Joshua Zirkzee’s season-ending hamstring tear, sustained at Newcastle, leaves Rasmus Højlund as the sole striker, despite his £52m exit rumours.
“Joshua’s out for the season—we’re preparing him for next year,” Amorim said.
Amad Diallo (ankle, May return), Lisandro Martinez (long-term), and Toby Collyer are absent, though Matthijs de Ligt could feature soon.
Jonny Evans trained but isn’t ready, leaving Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, and Noussair Mazraoui to anchor the back three. Youngster Harry Amass is in the squad, per @UtdDistrict, signaling Amorim’s faith in youth.
Amorim’s predicted XI (3-4-2-1)—Onana; Yoro, Maguire, Mazraoui; Dalot, Ugarte, Casemiro, Dorgu; Fernandes, Garnacho; Højlund.
Lyon, sixth in Ligue 1, are no pushovers, with Rayan Cherki’s stoppage-time equalizer last week and United’s interest in him fueling intrigue.
Roy Keane predicted a United win, noting, “They’re at home—Lyon’s not top-tier”. While fans on X are tense but hopeful with a semi-final against Athletic Bilbao or Rangers at stake.
