Lisandro Martinez has apologised and had talks with Jason Wilcox after blasting him publicly over Manchester United's transfer policy.
The defender lashed out following Tuesday’s Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.
The Argentina international questioned the club’s summer investment and insisting he expected more from “upstairs”.
Martinez singled out Wilcox, arguing that United needed a stronger squad to compete at the highest level after securing Champions League qualification last season.
However, the defender has now moved to resolve the situation, having met United’s hierarchy on Thursday, including Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada. Head coach Michael Carrick was also present at the meeting.
In a statement released on Thursday night, Martinez confirmed the discussions had been positive and accepted that the timing and setting of his original comments had been inappropriate.
“Today I met with the club's leadership and the manager,” he said.
“It was a very positive conversation, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday's game.
“Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity.
“The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise.”
In his earlier comments, the defender had argued that United needed more players to compete with Europe’s leading teams, while also acknowledging that the squad itself had to improve.
His latest statement appears designed to draw a line under the dispute, with Martinez recognising that his public intervention had not helped the club present a united front.
“Our club is at its best when we are all united, and I recognise that my words in that moment did not help with that,” he added.
Martinez also sought to reaffirm his belief in the club’s leadership and the wider effort being made to restore United to the top of the game.
“I know that every single person at Manchester United is doing everything possible to achieve our shared ambition: bringing the success that this club and its supporters deserve.
“With this situation now behind us, we are fully focused on winning together.”
It is said to have been Martinez’s decision to issue the public apology, while any disciplinary action or further internal discussions would remain private between the player and the club.
He has reportedly been fined, although the details have not been made public.
United now consider the matter closed as they turn their attention to Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Leeds United.
The episode began after Martinez expressed his frustration following the Atletico defeat, questioning whether the club had done enough in the transfer market to build a squad capable of competing in Europe.
On Wednesday, he issued a statement explaining that his comments had come from anger and disappointment, but stopped short of apologising. He insisted his words reflected his desire to see United competing for major honours and called on everyone at the club to maintain high standards.
Thursday’s meeting and subsequent apology have now brought the public dispute to an end, with Martinez stressing the importance of unity as United look to put their European disappointment behind them.
Football expert Tim Hanlon says: The outburst on Tuesday by Martinez is unlikely to have been spontaneous and suggests he is pushing for a move. He spoke after facing Atletico where his international defensive partner Cristian Romero plays and the club is coached by fellow Argentine Diego Simeone.
If Martinez says everything is now patched up then it is likely he and the club have come to an agreement on his future - he knuckles down for the rest of the season and leaves as opposed to an ugly dispute where he dropped.
