Roy Keane has torn into Manchester United with a savage three-word verdict—“Not good enough”—as Ruben Amorim’s side now brace for a daunting Premier League trip to Newcastle United this Sunday.
The Red Devils legend, speaking on Sky Sports didn’t mince words about the current squad’s struggles, offering a grim outlook for their upcoming clash at St James’ Park.
United’s season hit a new low with Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Manchester City, extending their winless run to five games and leaving them 13th in the table.
They then followed it up with a clash in the Europa League which they should have won but for two errors by Andre Onana.
Keane’s focus has shifted to the weekend, where Eddie Howe’s high-flying Magpies—vying for fourth—await. “From what I’ve seen, it’s not good enough,” Keane fumed. “No fight, no quality, no heart. Newcastle will smell blood.”
United’s 37 goals in 31 league games pale against Newcastle’s 48, and with the Toon unbeaten in their last six at home, the Irishman’s pessimism carries weight. “You look at this group—no characters, no leaders,” he added. “Newcastle are flying, full of energy. United? They’re sleepwalking.”
Amorim, five months into his tenure, faces mounting pressure after a tepid start, with just six wins in 19 matches. Sunday’s 4:30 PM BST kick-off could widen the gap to 11 points behind Newcastle, who edged United 1-0 at Old Trafford earlier this season.
Keane, a seven-time Premier League winner with United, spared no sympathy: “They’ve got to wake up, or Newcastle will batter them. Simple as that.”
The ex-captain’s rant comes as Sir Jim Ratcliffe pledges £100m for summer transfers, with names like Jarrad Branthwaite and Liam Delap linked.
But with Lyon tonight and Newcastle looming, Keane’s three-word slap—“Not good enough”—sums up a fanbase’s frustration. Can Amorim prove him wrong?
