Former Manchester United Striker Makes Tennis Debut

Former Manchester United footballer, Diego Forlan, is set to make his debut in professional tennis. The 45-year-old will participate in a doubles event next month in his home country Uruguay.

A New Chapter for Forlan

Having retired from professional football in 2019, Forlan is ready to take on new challenges in the sport of tennis. The former Manchester United player isn't new to the sport. As a promising teen tennis player, he has been featuring in ITF Masters events, specifically in the 45 and over category. However, this will be his first appearance in a recognized ATP event.

Forlan's Tennis Partner

For this event, Forlan will team up with Argentine Federico Coria. Coria, currently ranked in the top 101 in singles, has had a career-high position of 49 in 2023.

Forlan's Football Career

Diego Forlan joined Manchester United in 2002 making a total of 98 appearances for the club before transferring to La Liga side Villarreal. In Spain, Forlan received various individual accolades, including the European Golden Shoe, awarded to the top scorer in Europe, twice. Also, Forlan played a key role in leading Uruguay to finish third at the 2010 World Cup, winning the Golden Ball, and securing the 2011 Copa America title for his country.
