Speculation continues to swirl around
Manchester United as head coach
Rúben Amorim battles through a dismal start to the 2025–26 season.
With pressure mounting, former midfielder Michael Carrick has emerged as a name heavily linked with the job — thanks to backing from both pundits and fans.
Ex-United assistant Rene Meulensteen has been among the most vocal supporters. Speaking this week, he told
Bet Victor: “Michael Carrick could be the obvious option if United decide to go in a different direction.
"He knows the club, he knows the culture, and he understands the standards expected at Old Trafford.”
Carrick, who spent over a decade at United and lifted five Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy, has been earning plaudits for his work as a pundit.
Fans were quick to praise his insight during recent Champions League coverage, with many on social media calling for him to return to the club. One supporter wrote on X: “Carrick speaks with more tactical clarity in 10 minutes than we’ve seen from Amorim in weeks. Give him the job.”
Despite the romantic appeal, concerns remain over his managerial CV. Carrick’s only spell in charge came at Middlesbrough, where he achieved respectable but inconsistent results.
Critics argue that managing Middlesbrough in the Championship is a very different challenge compared to handling the scrutiny and pressure at Manchester United.
Financial factors may also play a role. Reports suggest United would have to pay around £12 million in compensation if they were to part ways with Amorim within a year of his appointment.
A club insider reportedly noted: “The board still backs Amorim, but they are watching results closely. Another run of poor form could change the picture quickly.”
For now, United are standing by their manager. But with Carrick’s reputation as a club legend and growing calls from supporters, the whispers will only get louder.
If results don’t improve soon, the former midfield maestro could find himself propelled into serious contention for one of the toughest jobs in football.
