Former Manchester City and Italy manager Roberto Mancini has reportedly told close friends that he believes he is in contention to replace Rúben Amorim at Manchester United, should the club decide to make a managerial change.
According to multiple reports in the UK and Europe, the 60-year-old Italian has “told friends he could be in with a shout” of taking over at Old Trafford if Amorim’s tenure comes to an early end.
Mancini “believes he is a candidate” and has privately expressed confidence that his experience and availability could appeal to United’s leadership.
Mancini, who left his position as Saudi Arabia national team coach in 2024, has not hidden his ambition to return to top-level club management.
His résumé includes winning Manchester City’s first Premier League title in 2012 and guiding Italy to the Euro 2020 championship.
Reports claim Mancini maintains a cordial relationship with United’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, with both men owning properties in the south of France and sharing a similar footballing philosophy, reported The Sun.
Insiders believe this connection could strengthen Mancini’s standing if Ratcliffe and his INEOS football team decide to evaluate alternatives.
Despite the speculation, Manchester United sources have so far reiterated public support for Amorim.
The Portuguese coach, appointed in May 2025, has endured a mixed start to his Premier League career, with United currently sitting 10th in the table. Ratcliffe recently told reporters that the club “will not make knee-jerk decisions” and continues to back Amorim’s long-term project.
Still, Mancini’s name has re-entered Premier League conversations. His proven record, tactical acumen, and free-agent status make him an attractive — if controversial — candidate, given his successful past at cross-town rivals Manchester City.
Whether this rumour evolves into genuine interest remains to be seen, but Mancini’s quiet confidence suggests he sees Old Trafford as a stage ready for his return.
