David Beckham has voiced his frustration at Manchester United’s poor form, saying he is “fed up” with watching lacklustre performances and warning that the current squad needs to rediscover what it means to play for the badge.
Beckham, who won six Premier League titles and a Champions League with United under Sir Alex Ferguson, said recent displays have left fans disillusioned.
Following the derby defeat to Manchester City, he urged Ruben Amorim’s players to show pride and accountability.
“I hope they’re hurting,” said Beckham. “As a player at Manchester United, when you lose a game, when you don’t perform, it has to hurt. It has to sit with you all week until the next chance you get to put it right.”
The former England captain reminded the squad of an unwritten rule that defined Ferguson’s era: every player had to take responsibility for results and channel disappointment into improvement. Beckham suggested that the current team often appears too passive in the face of setbacks.
“It’s not about pointing fingers. At United it was always about looking at yourself first and asking, ‘Did I do enough? Could I have done more?’ That’s what has to come back.”
United have taken just four points from their opening four Premier League games, marking their worst start in more than three decades. Manager Rúben Amorim has insisted he will not abandon his system, despite criticism from fans and ex-players. But Beckham’s comments add to the growing chorus of concern from former legends.
Beckham, who was part of the famous “Class of ’92,” stressed that supporters are demanding effort as much as results.
“The fans can accept mistakes; they can accept off days. But what they can’t accept is not seeing that fight. That’s the one thing you always have to show when you play for United.”
His words echo those of Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand in recent days, both of whom have questioned whether Amorim’s United are on the right track. With pressure mounting, Beckham’s call for accountability may resonate in the dressing room as the club tries to turn its season around.
