Bruno Fernandes has expressed a mix of loyalty and ambition over his future at Manchester United, offering clues as he faces a potential £90million transfer bid from Real Madrid.
“The club knew that I want to compete with the best teams. They knew that we needed to improve the team. And I think that we’re doing that,” Fernandes told United’s official website in August 2024 upon signing a new contract until 2027, with an option for an extra year.
“Obviously, I said to them: ‘I don’t need you to promise me that we’re going to win the league.’ Because no-one can promise that. But my first choice was always to stay at the club. It was not even demands, but the things that I wanted to see: the club going forward, [so] I could see a future on that.”
However, he’s also hinted at openness to a move, admitting last summer he had offers elsewhere but chose to stay because United “needed me.”
Now, with United struggling in 13th in the Premier League, Real Madrid are circling. The Spanish champions see Fernandes, who has eight goals and nine assists this season despite the team’s woes, as a long-term replacement for Luka Modric, who is nearing the end of his contract.
Scouts from Madrid have reportedly watched him extensively, impressed by his leadership and output—16 goals and 16 assists across all competitions.
The cash-strapped Red Devils face a dilemma: keep their talismanic captain, vital under Ruben Amorim, or cash in to ease financial pressures after INEOS’s cost-cutting, including staff redundancies.
Fernandes’ past comments reveal his frustration with United’s lack of progress, yet his summer extension showed commitment—provided the club matches his drive. With Real Madrid offering a shot at titles alongside stars like Bellingham and Mbappé, his resolve could be tested. For now, he’s focused on United’s Europa League push, but the transfer buzz looms large.
