Rúben Amorim has urged Manchester United to "accelerate their pursuit of a top-class striker" in January, seemingly reversing a promise not to raid his former club.
With United languishing in 14th place—just seven points above the relegation zone—drastic changes are required in the January transfer window to salvage their season.
A critical area for improvement is the attack, where significant adjustments are expected.
According to reports, Amorim has identified Viktor Gyökeres as a "top target" after previously unlocking the Swedish striker's potential during their time together at Sporting CP.
The Daily Star claims that Amorim has informed United executives that he “cannot wait until the summer” to sign Gyökeres, despite initially stating he would not pursue players from Sporting when he took charge.
In response, the report indicates that Manchester United "will step up their bid" to bring Gyökeres—who was once an under-the-radar player at Brighton—back to the Premier League in January.
However, the move could prove challenging, with Sporting reportedly demanding the striker’s full release clause of £80m.
This financial hurdle complicates the situation. United "do not have the funds" for major signings in January without making sacrifices.
While Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee are viewed as potential sales to raise funds, sources close to TEAMtalk suggest that "Gyökeres could realistically only arrive in the summer," as his price tag remains prohibitive for a winter move.
As a result, Amorim may have to "explore more creative solutions" to address his side's struggles in front of goal.
Meanwhile, there appears to be more progress toward a reunion with another former player, as reports suggest United are pursuing Paris Saint-Germain's Nuno Mendes.
Contract talks between Mendes and PSG have reportedly broken down, and the left-wing-back—who played under Amorim at Sporting—has given his "approval to a Premier League move" to link up with his compatriot.
Another ambitious target rumored to be on Amorim’s radar is Victor Osimhen. Currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, Osimhen is a name the club is considering, though more realistic options are also being explored.
On the departure front, it is understood that Casemiro has agreed to leave United this month, signaling potential shakeups in the squad.
With Gyökeres and Mendes on his wishlist and further departures likely, Amorim seems determined to reshape United’s fortunes—despite the financial and logistical challenges ahead.
