Manchester United manager
Rúben Amorim praised his side’s maturity and discipline after they secured a
2–0 victory over Sunderland, describing it as an “adult performance” that reflected the team’s growing focus and resilience.
Speaking after the match, Amorim admitted that his team were far from their fluent best, but said the manner of the win mattered more than the style on this occasion. “We didn’t play well during all of the game, but we had our moments,” he said.
“If you look at the performance, it was a team — focused, defending well, trying to kill the game in the second half. When we are not playing well, we are defending well. We were competitive and an adult team today. We need to win these games and keep clean sheets.”
The Portuguese coach highlighted that consistency and responsibility were key themes he wanted to instill in the squad.
“It’s important that we don’t lose our shape when we are not at our best,” Amorim added. “This is what I mean by being an adult team — managing moments, staying calm, not rushing, not panicking. These are things we’ve been working on.”
Amorim also praised Senne Lammens, who impressed on his debut, and singled out Mason Mount and Benjamin Šeško for their efforts in front of goal.
“Senne did really well. It was good for him and good for us,” he said. “Mason and Benjamin took their chances, but the whole team played with the right mentality.”
The victory ended a patchy run of results that had put Amorim under pressure. While some sections of the media have speculated about his position, the United boss insisted he remains focused on improvement rather than outside noise.
“We need to do this kind of performance away from home as well. That’s the next step,” he said.
Amorim concluded: “It’s not about showing words — it’s about actions. The players know that. Today they showed maturity. That’s what I want to see from Manchester United.”
