Manchester United have been home to countless legendary players, but George Best, Denis Law, and Sir Bobby Charlton will always be special.
Celebrated as some of the greatest players in the club's history, their legacy is immortalized with a statue outside Old Trafford.
Having three players of such caliber on the same team is extraordinary, and for opponents, it was a nightmare.
For teammates, however, it must have been an unforgettable experience—something Manchester United's legendary goalkeeper Alex Stepney knows firsthand.
Stepney, who had the privilege of playing alongside all three, recently shared his thoughts on the iconic trio.
Speaking to United in Focus, he praised their unique qualities but admitted that one of them stood out above the rest.
While Law and Charlton were undeniable superstars, Stepney described Best as a “genius” who eclipsed even his illustrious teammates.
“Not many players can say they played with three European footballers of the year for like seven years,” Stepney began.
“They were three forwards, but they were three forwards in different positions.
“Dennis was a poacher—the ideal poacher—from the penalty spot into the six-yard box. Anything that dropped anywhere, he was on it. He could also head the ball. Just fantastic.
“You had Bobby, who would score goals from 25 yards with rocket shots and beat players—even his fourth goal in the final was an incredible goal on the half volley. That was Bobby.”
When it came to Best, Stepney’s admiration was clear. He stated: “But George—he was a different sort of player. He would beat around four or five players and then go back and try and beat them again!
"Then he’d put the ball in the back of the net. He scored goals—right foot, left foot, and headers as well. He was a genius.”
While Law and Charlton left indelible marks on United’s history, Best’s combination of extraordinary talent and captivating persona has cemented him as one of football’s all-time greats.
His stats back that up: 474 appearances for the club, 179 goals, and success across multiple positions.
Players like Best don’t come around often. His skill, flair, and creativity set him apart, making him a player who will be remembered for generations.
As Stepney aptly put it, “Best, what a player.”
